Why Subfloor Prep Decides How Long Your New Floor Lasts

When a new floor clicks, bounces, or opens gaps within the first year, the planks are rarely the problem. The problem is almost always the surface they were installed on.

In South Florida, that surface is usually a concrete slab, often covered with old ceramic tile and thinset. Laying new flooring over uneven tile or leftover adhesive transfers every high spot and dip into the new floor.

Proper prep starts with removal: taking up old flooring and grinding or scraping away thinset and glue. Next comes leveling, where low spots are filled and high spots ground down so the base is flat to the manufacturer's tolerance.

Then there's moisture. Concrete slabs release moisture, and without the right barrier or underlayment, it can damage wood floors and weaken adhesives. Checking before installation costs far less than replacing a floor afterward.

Prep is the least visible part of a flooring project and the part that matters most. It's why we treat subfloor removal and preparation as its own service instead of an afterthought.
